We chat with Nicole Weeks, Branch Manager & Home Loan Consultant at Willows in Townsville, QLD Defence Bank, about what it’s like working for the community-orientated bank, and what they offer that other banks don’t…

Defence Bank is a very community orientated bank. What does ‘community’ mean to you?

Community to me means a group of individuals who share the same values, attitude & work towards a common goal. For Defence Bank, it is identifying with the Defence community & identifying the challenges they face. We are committed to ensuring the Defence community choose to belong to Defence Bank for their financial needs.

Tell us a little about your life or involvement in the Defence community.

My partner is a Corporal in the Army and has served for over 12 years. He was an infantry soldier for over 10 years and is now an Aircrewman working on the MRH-90 helicopter. Having worked in the Defence community myself for more than 12 years, I have had the opportunity to attend many Defence events including open days, charity balls, mess dinners, parades, ceremonies etc. I have also worked in 3 states at 9 different bases.

Why did you decide to work for Defence Bank?

I was 19 when I joined Defence Bank and was seeking full-time work in a different field. I have enjoyed the past 12 years helping assist members in achieving their financial goals and also the many people I have worked with along the way.

What differentiates Defence Bank from other banks?

We definitely have a strong focus in helping and improving our members’ financial position. We are always looking for ways to improve our products and services, and how we can offer the best to our members. Our customer service is exceptional and our members are always our number one priority. We form strong bonds with our members far beyond bank and customer relationship. Defence Bank is a bank who truly cares about their members and the community.

Your relationship with your customers is paramount; tell us your story of a Defence Bank member, Jacqui.

Jacqui was one of my first construction home loan members when I relocated to Lavarack in late 2011. Since this time, I have assisted their family with various financial decisions including setting up accounts for them and their children’s. In 2016 when they planned to renovate their kitchen, they came to see me at Willows Branch, and Jacqui would send photos of the renovation and completed work, which made me feel very involved in the whole process.

When they considered buying an investment unit for their daughter, Jacqui contacted me for guidance as she trusts my judgement and opinion about their financial situation, and how to best plan for their investments. I am proud to know that members value my advice, particularly for their large financial purchases and goals.
