The Role


Based in Melbourne’s South East, Broadspectrum has the opportunity for an experienced and energetic HSE Principal Advisor to join the team. Reporting into the National Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Manager for Urban Infrastructures, this position will see you actively partner with the operational teams in  leading HSE behavioural improvements and assisting with hazard identification and risk mitigation to both Broadspectrum employees and our subcontractors. This would include but not be limited to, review and update of HSE Management Plans, Hazard Registers, Safe Work Method Statements, Risk Assessments and Incident Investigations. In addition you shall assist the HSE Corporate team and Manager in driving HSE Leads (with quality improvements) and compliance checks against legislative, Broadspectrum and our client’s requirements giving a ‘Best Practice HSE Management System.


While the respective Operational Manager is accountable for the Health, Safety and Environmental performance of their contract, project or site and their compliance with all obligations, legal and corporate, this role as a Principle Advisor is accountable for the interpretation of the frameworks, systems and processes that enable this performance and compliance and for the transference of this knowledge into the business. The successful candidate will act as primary point of contact with on-site operational and client management on site-related HSE matters.


Furthermore, you will:

  • Liaise with Client and specific legislative agency personnel regarding OH&S and environmental issues, risks and hazards assessment that occur in the workplace
  • Be a “Centre of Expertise (COE)” for HSE areas and items and provider leadership, coaching, advice and support to operational and applicable Broadspectrum and subcontractor  persons in the implementation of the HSE strategy and objectives
  • Assist with building the capability of our HSE Advisors, e.g. train the trainer, coaching and support
  • Work with the HSE National Manager and HSE Advisors to deliver HSE objectives through assisting with implementation of the HSE strategy, objectives, initiatives and targeted projects
  • Ensure that specific sites / workplaces in an ever changing environment have identified hazards and have controls in place where reasonably practicable to mitigate the risks Provide expert HSE advice to stakeholders for both legislative and Broadspectrum training requirements including assisting with Verification of Competencies (VOC’s) on key tasks  
  • Analyse audit results, key learnings from incidents and non-conformances as raised by third parties for trends and areas of focus for attention and input into action / improvement plans.
  • Facilitate incident investigations as applicable dependant on severity and both client and Broadspectrum procedures. This includes but is not limited to correct identification of both Root Cause and Contributing Factor(s) and that any actions both address and close of these as identified


Position Requirements

  • Diploma/Cert IV Occupational Health and Safety and significant experience in Health, Safety and/or Environment disciplines in large, complex organisations
  • Certificate IV in Training and Assessment W
  • Auditing  accreditation and / or experience
  • Experience of working in Construction and / or other High Risk organisations
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Victorian Workplace Health and Safety Legislation, including working knowledge of the Model WHS Laws in Australia
  • High level of computer skills including MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint,  and emailExcellent interpersonal and presentation skills – With  a focus on engagement
